Master's in Biomedical Engineering Online
Biomedical engineering is one of the fastest growing professions today. The Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts a 23-percent growth in biomedical engineering jobs from 2014 to 2024.1
Founded in 1968 as one of the first biomedical engineering programs in the world, the Case Western Reserve University Department of Biomedical Engineering has established highly successful and comprehensive graduate programs in research and education. The department is ranked #17 nationally for biomedical engineering programs for graduate studies according to U.S. News and World Report.2
The department continues to evolve to match the recent accelerated pace of biomedical engineering developments. As a joint program in the Case School of Engineering and the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, our cutting-edge research spans a wide range of new interdisciplinary engineering discoveries and biomedical applications. The department is associated with more than 20 research centers and more than $41.7 million in current grants. Our research and education programs are strongly integrated with industry through job opportunities for graduates, sponsored research and industrial training activities.

Message from the Program Director
Dominique M. Durand, PhD, Program Director
Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering
Neural Engineering Center and Biomedical Engineering Department
“Welcome to the Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering online degree program. Started in 1968, the BME department at CWRU is one of the most established and most respected departments in the world. Our faculty are experts in neural engineering, imaging, prosthetics, biomaterials and tissue engineering. They work with clinicians to solve health problems related to many diseases such as cancer, epilepsy, paralysis, stroke, cardiac arrhythmias and infection. Although this program is online, you will learn the tools and engineering skills necessary to solve today’s biomedical problems.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected the growth in the demand for biomedical engineers over the next 10 years to be a healthy 7%.1 Biomedical engineers are in demand in all sectors of the health industry including hospitals, regulatory bodies like the FDA, biotech companies, national laboratories and universities.
Our online program is designed to provide students with depth and breadth in the field with core courses in the instrumentation and analysis fundamentals as well as physiology, and specialty courses in imaging, neural engineering and biomaterials. The degree will also provide significant depth in translational skills with courses in regulatory aspects of health technology, biodesign, engineering management and team projects.
The coursework has been designed especially for our online students using best practices for effective online pedagogy adapted for engineering material. In particular, we have focused on teaching presentation and problem-solving skills to engineers online using dedicated simulation software and team projects with on-campus students. The material taught in these classes is the same as that offered to our on-campus students and online students are paired with on-campus students for design projects and presentations.
We look forward to meeting you online and providing you with an important stepping stone for a career in biomedical engineering.”
