An Innovative Education in Engineering—Online
Where are you currently employed and what is your title?
I currently work as a validation engineer for the medical division of an adhesive technology company.
Did you receive a promotion or change positions after obtaining this degree?
I didn't receive a promotion or change positions, but I was offered a raise as a result of my degree.
Why did you choose Case Western Reserve University online?
I chose Case Western Reserve because of its prestigious reputation. CWRU is known in the biomedical community for having one of the best programs in the country, so I was delighted when I found out they were offering an online Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering program. Completing my degree online allowed me to work full time and still fit in school around my ever-shifting schedule. It was convenient, without sacrificing quality.
What was your favorite part of the program?
I really liked interacting with the other students through the discussion boards. Even though we're spread throughout the country, I still feel like I got to know my classmates. You see a lot of the same names in each of your classes, so it feels like a close-knit community even though you've never met face to face.
The thing I liked most of all is the flexibility this program allows. Not only was I able to complete my degree while working full time, I was able to complete the program in four semesters instead of five. I like that each student can tailor it to their own schedule and pace.
Any advice on why this program might be helpful for an engineer?
I felt like this was a really well-balanced program. There's just the right mix of technical, theory and application-based classes. The curriculum really focuses on giving you the tools you need to succeed in the industry.
We're taught how to design a device that will truly benefit the end user without losing sight of the production process and business side of things. In order to be successful in the real world, you have to be able to positively impact both.
Was the program what you expected?
Yes and no. It was certainly a challenging program like I thought it would be, but I was a little surprised at how easily I was able to manage it within my schedule. Being able to choose when I attended class let me plan out my weeks ahead of time. If I knew I was traveling one week, I could work ahead to make sure my class work was completed on time. It was really nice to see the entire class laid out in front of you on Week 1.
Overall, I thought this was a great program. You could tell the choices were well thought out in order to offer a nice balance of different focus areas.
